Disbelief
Many people cannot believe that the occurrence of sexual assault is so high or that sexual assault occurs in their community.
The shame and stigma of sexual assault is unfortunate and condemns the victim more often than the assailant, so many times the victim is not willing to discuss their assault.
Because sexual assault generally lacksphysical evidence, it commonly is the victim's word against the assailant's. The criminal justice system works from the premise that people are innocent until proven guilty, those cases are dismissed.
15 out of 16 people accused of sexual assault do not serve any time in jail.
