A Forensic Nurse Examiner is a register nurse (R.N.) who has advanced education and clinical preparation in forensic examination of sexual assault victims. Forensic Nurse Examiner programs began in the 1990’s as SANEs (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) in hundreds of communities across the country to address the inadequacy of the traditional model for sexual assault medical evidentiary exams. Those who work with sexual assault victims have long recognized that victims are often re-victimized when they come to hospital emergency department, for medical care and forensic evidence collection. Not only, have victims had to wait for a long time to be examined, but those who perform the exams often lacked training and training and experience in working with sexual assault victims and in gathering forensic evidence. The SANE program provides a victim-sensitive solution to systemic gaps in the medical-legal response to victims. It also prevents expensive Emergency Room bills.

Mrs. Hilde is an experienced nurse practitioner with a Master's of Science in Nursing-Maternal Child Health Teaching Specialization and a Post- Master's Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. In 1967 she received her BSN in Nursing from Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska, and her MSN from the Medical College of Georgia in 1979. She pursued Post-Master's work at Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, receiving her Obstetrics/Gynecology Nurse Practitioner Certificate in 1980. Mrs. Hilde's work experience includes more than 21 years of teaching experience as a member of the Faculty, School of Nursing, Georgia Southern University (GSU), Statesboro, Georgia, in the graduate and undergraduate programs teaching women's health content. She joined the Clinical Staff of GSU Health Services in January 2001, where she has worked as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and served as supervisor of the Women's Health Department. In 2003 Mrs. Hilde completed the GNESA adolescent/adult sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) course. ElDonna is actively involved with GSU Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and started the forensic examination collection at the Health Center as a service to students who have been sexual assaulted. She retired from GSU August 2005 but remains part-time work status presently. Fall 2006 she was one of the founding members of incorporating the Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault Center, Inc., and an active as the SANE Coordinator of the SANEs in our area. She is presently completing her requirements as a Pediatric SANE. ElDonna is an advocate for patients and for the nursing profession. KATHLEEN A KOON, RN, PHD, Associate Professor Emerita of Nursing, Georgia Southern University. Dr. Koon received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from D'Youville College in 1965, her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in 1971, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Virginia in 1991. Dr. Koon has worked as a Public Health Nurse and Family Nurse Clinician/Practitioner in New York and Tennessee, respectively. Dr. Koon has over 21 years of university teaching experience. She joined the faculty at Georgia Southern University in 1991 and was appointed Director of the BSN Program in 1993, serving in that position until her retirement in June, 2004. Since her retirement from the School of Nursing, Dr. Koon has continued to be active professionally including holding offices in professional organizations, writing a quarterly journal column, and qualifying and serving as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in Statesboro.

REBECCA HOLMES started nursing with an LPN degree from Forsyth Technical School in Winston- Salem, NC in 1969. She worked in Virginia and North Carolina. She was employed by Watauga County Hospital in Boone NC and worked in Labor and Delivery for three years. She graduated from Caldwell Community College in Lenior, North Carolina in 1989 and moved to Statesboro, Georgia. Rebecca currently works at East Georgia Regional Medicak Center, where she has been employed in the Emergency Department since 1989. She completed her qualifications for the Sane program in 2003 and became the first SANE nurse in Bulloch County, Georgia

MAE ANDERSON, ASN, WHNP-BC Ms. Anderson is an experienced Registered Nurse and Gynecologic/Obstetric Nurse Practitioner who completed her Nurse Practitioner training and certification in 1994 from Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to her work as a Nurse Practitioner, she served as a Registered Nurse for more than 10 years after completing an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing from Brunswick College, Brunswick, Georgia. Ms. Anderson joined the staff of the Health Services in 1996 where she has worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the Women's Health Department.

KAREN M HILDE,MSN, WHNP-BC, SANEMs. Hilde is an experienced Registered Nurse and Obstetric/Gynecologic Nurse Practitioner. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA, in 1998, and her Master of Science in Nursing and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate from the University of South Alabama, Mobile, AL, in 2004. Prior to her service as a Nurse Practitioner, she served as a Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse for 7 years, and as a staff Registered Nurse in a private OB/GYN office for 1 year. She joined the Clinical Staff of the Health Services in February 2005 part-time, and then became full-time in December 2005, where she has worked as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner.

DONNA R. HODNICKI, PhD, FNP-BC, FAAN,CLNC Dr. Donna Hodnicki has been a family nurse practitioner [FNP] since 1980 and on faculty in the School of Nursing at Georgia Southern since 1983 teaching in the graduate nursing program. Since 1993 she has served as the Graduate Nursing Program Director. Her practice experience as a FNP includes providing care to patients in the health department, primary care practices and in the School of Nursing clinic. She consults nationally with graduate nursing programs and has held a congressional appointment to the National Health Service Corp Advisory Council. Leadership activities include election to local, state and national professional nursing organizations. Since 2001, she has served as the Co-Editorial Director for the American Journal for Nurse Practitioners. Her work with the American Nurse Credentialing Center withing the American Nurse's Association includes providing national certification reviews for family nurse practitioners and the development and offering of a pharmacology review course. As a certified legal nurse consultant she consults and reviews legal cases. She is an advocate for patients and the profession of nursing. Her interest in being a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) is founded in her desire to advocate for those in need of assistance.

CONSTANCE MORGAN, BSN, WHNP-BCMs. Morgan is an experienced Registered Nurse and Gynecologic/Obstetric Nurse Practitioner. She received her BS Degree in Nursing from Albany State University in 1977. She served as a Registered Nurse for more than 15 years before joining the Clinical Staff of the Health Services from 1996-2000 as a Nurse Practitioner in the Women's Health Department.. She completed her Gynecologic/Obstetric Nurse Practitioner certification in 1991 from Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta Georgia. She has also worked as a Nurse Practitioner in Public Health and The Department of Corrections with the Juvenile Justice System. Ms. Morgan rejoined the Clinical Staff of the Health Services in 2005 where she has worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the Women's Health Department.
